Life Before Undeath Part 10

It had been a week since Snerra had arrived in Lordaeron. He and the rest of his small group of reinforcements from Strormwind were tasked with keeping the peace within Capital City while some of the city’s main guards went out with Prince Arthas Menethil to investigate the rumors of some kind of illness affecting the outlying towns and villages.

Snerra didn’t mind the work. While it was almost exactly the same thing he had done in Stormwind, at least the sights were new. He had never been outside of Stormwind proper before. And it helped that King Terenas and the people of Lordaeron were grateful for the assistance provided by their long-time allies from the southern kingdom.

As Snerra’s shift came to an end and his relief was given a proper turnover, he started his afternoon ritual. Instead of going to the barracks or to the local tavern with the other soldiers, Snerra investigated the city. If his mother and twin brother did leave Northshire when the Orcs attacked Stormwind, perhaps there were records indicating where they were. He had admittedly small hope. The sheer number of evacuees that crossed north on the Great Sea and landed in Southshore on that fateful morning meant the odds were stacked against him.  If the kingdom was anything like Stormwind, there was little hope there were any records of the evacuees that yet remained.

Entering a section of the city he had not yet been to, Snerra looked around. All manner of government offices were before him. He glanced around and saw one that collected tithes from the citizens of Lordaeron, one whose specific function was the planning of the Wickerman celebration as well as a diplomatic building for visiting emissaries from neighboring kingdoms.

And the registrar’s office.

Entering the office and removing his helm, Snerra approached the elderly woman behind the desk. “Excuse me, ma’am. I was curious if there was any chance that I could ask a favor.”

Glancing up from her files, the bespectacled woman saw the shining armor and the Stormwind crest emblazoned upon it. “Hm? Oh, my. Yes, of course, my dear. What can I help one of Stormwind’s finest with today?”

Snerra took a second to ponder his next move. Perhaps playing upon his station as a volunteer from Stormwind would help his cause. It also couldn’t hurt to gain sympathy from the woman with a few distorted facts. After all, he was simply looking for his mother. There was no harm in that, was there?

“Ma’am, many years ago, I was one of the evacuees that came from Stormwind when the city was overrun by the viscious Orcs. I came with my mother. I was just a small child then. In the ensuing chaos, I was separated from her and I’ve not seen her since. I was wondering if, by chance, you happen to have any records indicating if she’s still living under the domain of the great kingdom of Lordaeron.”

Pity washed over the old woman’s face. “Oh, you poor, poor dear. Of course. Let me see what I can find. What is your mother’s name?”

“Aleya Caltrains.”

“Of course. One moment, dear.” With that, she whisked away. Snerra could hear the opening and closing of a number of drawers, certain the old woman was searching through her myriad files. Within a minute, she returned.

“Aleya Caltrains, you said?” she asked.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Yes, she’s still within the kingdom’s domain, living in the foothills of Hillsbrad. Hillsbrad Fields, to be exact. It’s an old farmstead that’s been growing crops for the kingdom for generations. Is there anything else I can help you with today, my dear?”

Snerra didn’t hear the last part. He knew his mother was still alive. And she was close.

Waving a half-hearted thanks to the elderly clerk, Snerra departed the registrar’s office.
